Bathroom Transformation: From Cramped and Outdated to Spa-Like Luxury
Bathroom Transformation in the Northwest Suburbs
Primary bathroom – These homeowners inherited a primary bathroom layout that wasted so much precious space. It also didn’t match their modern tastes. The massive tub (that was never used) dominated the whole bathroom while a cramped shower left them feeling claustrophobic every morning. Storage was minimal, privacy was nonexistent, and the entire space felt stuck in the past.
They knew something better was possible. They just needed help figuring out what that looked like.

Multiple Bathroom Challenges, One Outdated Space
This wasn’t a simple cosmetic update. The bathroom required a complete gut renovation and strategic relocation of nearly every element. As a bathroom designer, I believe that the most successful transformations come from understanding how clients live in their spaces. This insight allows me to not only design something that meets their daily needs but also something that is elevated and uniquely stylistic.
The original bathroom had several functional issues:
- The entry door opened directly in view of the window to the front of the house. Offering no privacy for the walk to the closet after a shower.
- Space allocation was completely backwards. An enormous soaking tub consumed valuable square footage. Had they used the tub, perhaps it could offer some value, but they weren’t tub people. And the existing shower measured a claustrophobic three foot by three foot. For a primary bathroom, the proportions simply didn’t make sense.
- Storage was almost nonexistent. With minimal cabinetry and no designated space for daily essentials, the homeowners were constantly struggling to keep toiletries and necessities organized.
- A window in the bathroom that seemed like it could be an asset was actually a liability. The blinds remained perpetually closed for privacy and winter warmth, making the window dead space that could be better utilized as a full wall of cabinetry. Especially since a skylight already provided natural light.
- Finally, the toilet placement lacked any sense of privacy or sophistication, immediately visible upon entry.

The Bathroom Design Solution: Thoughtful Space Planning Meets Modern Luxury
Great bathroom design isn’t about following trends. It’s about creating solutions that transform how people experience their daily routines. For this Chicagoland Area bathroom remodel, every decision served a purpose.
Reimagining Bathroom Layout for Privacy and Flow
The first priority was relocating the entry door. By moving the doorway, we achieved two huge goals. We created direct access to the closet and established true privacy. Now when the door opens, the view is intentional and elegant rather than inadvertently exposing the bathroom’s private spaces.
We also relocated the toilet to a discreet position, tucked away and invisible from the entry. Above it, we added custom cabinet storage for necessities and toiletries that transformed what was once wasted vertical space into highly functional storage.
Trading the Unused Tub for a Showstopping Shower
The decision to eliminate the oversized tub was easy due to the fact that the homeowners never used it and had a secondary tub in the hall bathroom. Removing the tub freed up substantial square footage for what they really wanted… a luxurious shower experience.
The new two-person shower measures an impressive four feet by seven feet, which is nearly three times larger than the original cramped stall. Designed for two people to comfortably shower simultaneously, it features separate shower heads plus a shared handheld fixture in the center. The textured porcelain tile with natural striations adds visual interest and sophisticated texture while remaining incredibly low maintenance.
This is the kind of bathroom feature that elevates a home. For architects specifying primary bathrooms or remodelers working with discerning clients, a generously sized walk-in shower has become the new luxury standard.
Maximizing Bathroom Storage Without Sacrificing Style
Storage tripled in this bathroom renovation. By closing off the perpetually covered window, we gained valuable wall space for additional cabinetry. Combined with new vanity storage and the cabinet above the toilet, the homeowners now have dedicated places for everything.
We also incorporated a sit-down makeup area. A personal detail that transforms the bathroom functionally. It’s these kinds of customized touches that make a designer’s involvement invaluable, whether a homeowner planning your dream bathroom or an architect who needs a design partner to execute the vision.
Modern Materials That Work as Hard as They Look
The homeowners craved a contemporary style to replace the traditional details that came with their house purchase. Large format porcelain tiles deliver on multiple fronts. They’re visually stunning with a modern aesthetics, exceptional durability, and remarkably easy to maintain. For busy professionals, low maintenance luxury isn’t just a preference, it’s essential.
LED mirrors create the illusion of even more space while providing excellent task lighting. They’re sleek, modern, and incredibly functional. They offer the perfect finishing touch for a bathroom that’s equal parts beautiful and practical.
The Result: A Bathroom That Finally Fits Their Lifestyle
This primary bathroom transformation proves that thoughtful design creates exponential value. The homeowners gained a two-person shower that turns their morning routine into a spa-like experience, storage solutions that keep everything organized and accessible, and a modern touch that feels like home.
No regrets about removing the tub. No looking back at the cramped, poorly planned original layout. Just a bathroom that works beautifully.
Why Professional Bathroom Design Matters
Whether you’re a homeowner contemplating a bathroom remodel, an architect who needs a designer to develop the interiors after the space planning is complete, or a remodeler with clients who need comprehensive design services, projects like this demonstrate the value of expert bathroom design.
As a designer, I bridge the gap between vision and execution. I understand spatial planning, material selection, fixture specifications, and most importantly how to create bathrooms that enhance daily life rather than merely look good in photos.
The right designer asks the questions that uncover what you truly need, challenges assumptions about how space should be used, and creates solutions you might never have imagined on your own.
