The Sink That Steals the Show: What North Shore Chicago Kitchen Designers are Selecting in 2026

Typically, as part of any thoughtful North Shore Chicago kitchen design from Lake Forest and Highland Park to the beautifully renovated homes of Glencoe, Winnetka and Wilmette, there’s a good chance you’ll find a single bowl undermount stainless steel sink front and center. It’s not just a practical sink, but it’s a statement when it comes to an updated North Shore kitchen remodel. A workhorse with a design element that clients fall in love with.

Some kitchen designers call them workstation sinks. Some clients just call them “the sink with all the accessories.” Whatever you call it, there’s a reason it keeps showing up on wish lists across the North Shore.

What Is a Workstation and Why Does It Matter in a North Shore Chicago Kitchen Design?

A single bowl undermount workstation sink is engineered to do far more than hold water. These sinks feature integrated ledges running along the top interior of the bowl that allow you to slide cutting boards, colanders, drying racks, and prep accessories in and out as you work. The result is a seamless, flexible prep zone that makes the sink feel less like a utility fixture and more like a culinary assistant.

The concept bridges the gap between a professional kitchen and a residential one which is exactly why it resonates so much with the design-forward clients we work with across the North Shore. They cook. They entertain. They want a kitchen that performs as beautifully as it looks. Whether they’re renovating a historic home in Evanston or building new in Lake Bluff, the workstation sink conversation comes up on nearly every project.

Workstation Sink vs. Standard Sink — What’s the Difference?

A standard undermount stainless steel sink gives you a clean, functional basin. A workstation sink gives you all of that plus a fully integrated prep and cleanup station. The ledge system is the game changer that allows accessories to rest on tracks inside the bowl, allowing you to chop, rinse, drain, and dry all in one place without moving between counters.

For clients doing a kitchen remodel on the North Shore, where countertop space is precious and the kitchen is truly the center of daily life, the workstation upgrade is always worth the conversation when it comes to a North Shore Chicago kitchen design. It not only offers the already mentioned advantages, but also allows you to put covers on the sink itself that creates additional counter and surface area.  Workstations are not just for large kitchens.  This is where your kitchen designer comes in to provide options that are personalized to your space regardless of the size

A quick note on gauge — and why it matters.

When comparing workstation sinks, one of the most important specifications to understand is the gauge of the stainless steel. Gauge refers to the thickness of the metal and here’s the detail that trips people up…the lower the gauge number, the thicker and more durable the steel. So a 16-gauge sink is actually thicker and stronger than an 18-gauge sink.

For a busy kitchen on the North Shore where the sink is being used hard every day, 16-gauge stainless steel offers better dent resistance, better noise reduction, and a more substantial feel.  18-gauge is still a quality residential specification and is used by respected brands, but when you’re investing in a North Shore Chicago kitchen design and remodel that’s built to last, gauge is a detail worth understanding before you make a decision. We’ll call out the gauge for each brand we cover below so you can compare with confidence.

5 Brands Being Specified in a North Shore Chicago Kitchen Design — From Investment to Value

Not all single bowl undermount stainless steel sinks with accessories are created equal. Here’s how we think about the different brands and have organized them by price point so you can see exactly where each brand fits and why.

The Galley — The Ultra-Premium Standard in a North Shore Chicago Kitchen Design

The Galley is in a category of its own. This is the brand that defined the modern workstation sink concept at the highest level. It is the first one that I was aware of until everyone else caught on. Their systems aren’t measured in standard cabinet increments rather they’re modular installations that can span up to seven feet or more, transforming an entire section of the kitchen into a dedicated prep and cleanup zone. The accessories are beautifully engineered of solid hardwood boards, stainless racks, and bins that glide on precision rails.

What also sets Galley apart at the material level is their use of 16-gauge 316L marine grade stainless steel.  This is the same corrosion-resistant alloy used in marine applications. It’s hand-built in the USA, commercially welded inside and out, and wrapped in their proprietary sound reduction technology that reduces noise and vibration by up to 95%. This isn’t just a premium sink, it’s built to a standard most residential sinks never approach.

Think of it as the Mercedes of workstation sinks. For our North Shore Chicago kitchen design clients who are doing a full kitchen renovation or new build and want the absolute best, Galley is the specification we’re most excited to make. It’s a significant investment both in the sink itself and in the custom cabinetry it requires, but it’s the kind of piece that defines the kitchen for decades. Once you’ve used one, everything else feels like a compromise.

If you’d like to experience a Galley sink in person before making a decision, we designed a working display at Abt Electronics in Glenview where you can see it, touch it, and use it exactly as you would in your own kitchen. There’s no better way to understand what makes this sink different than standing at one yourself.

Franke Peak Workstation

Franke – The European Premium Choice in a North Shore Chicago Kitchen Design

For clients who want a European design sensibility in their kitchen, Franke falls between Galley and the mainstream brands. This Swiss brand has over a century of craftsmanship behind it. Their Peak series is built with 16-gauge stainless steel that is hand fabricated to ensure the highest levels of finish quality and durability, and features their Integral Ledge System… a refined workstation setup with cutting board, colander, and grid accessories that work seamlessly over the drain. The result is a sink that feels as precise and considered as the European appliances many of our North Shore clients are already specifying alongside it.

One thing worth noting is that Franke’s Pescara series drops to 18-gauge stainless, so when we specify Franke for a premium kitchen remodel, we’re typically specifying the Peak series at 16-gauge. However, at this level, both are absolutely fine.  Franke accessories are largely sold separately, so factor that into the total investment when comparing options in a North Shore Chicago kitchen design.

Kohler & Elkay — The Proven Performers in a North Shore Chicago Kitchen Design

In addition to Franke, Kohler and Elkay are where the majority of our kitchen remodel projects on the Northshore land and for very good reason. Both brands deliver genuine workstation sink performance, beautiful fit and finish, and proven long-term reliability at a price point that makes sense for high-quality remodels without custom cabinetry requirements.

In a North Shore Chicago kitchen design, Kohler Prolific is one of our most frequently specified sinks across Highland Park, Wilmette, and Northbrook. It’s constructed from 18-gauge stainless steel, which is the industry standard for high-quality residential sinks and performs beautifully in daily use. Kohler compensates for the slightly thinner gauge with their SilentShield sound absorption technology, which does an exceptional job of keeping the kitchen quiet. The Prolific features three levels of integrated ledges and a complete accessory kit including a bamboo cutting board, grated racks, colander, and wash bin which are all included in the price. It fits a standard 36 inch sink base cabinet, which is critical on remodel projects where we’re working around existing structures. Kohler’s name also a familiar one, which makes the conversation easier from the start.

Elkay Crosstown Workstation

Elkay Crosstown steps up to 16-gauge stainless steel on their premium workstation kits, which gives it a slight edge over Kohler in terms of raw material thickness and dent resistance. Elkay also incorporates Sound Guard noise-deadening technology, a tight geometric design with flat bottom and straight sidewalls, and a full accessory kit that comes with a wood cutting board, colander, drying rack, roll-up drying rack, and bottom grid. With over a century of American craftsmanship behind the brand, the Crosstown series holds its own against anything in its class.

For clients trying to decide between the two, gauge is one honest point of differentiation… Elkay at 16-gauge versus Kohler at 18-gauge. That said, both are excellent residential specifications and the practical performance difference in everyday use is minimal when sound dampening technology is factored in. It often comes down to aesthetics as Kohler has slightly more name recognition with homeowners, while Elkay’s sharper geometric interior profile appeals to clients drawn to a cleaner, more contemporary look. Both are specifications we stand behind completely.

Ruvati – The Value-Conscious Choice in a North Shore Chicago Kitchen Design

Ruvati offers their workstation sinks in 16-gauge stainless steel, which is genuinely impressive at their price point and is one of the reasons they punch above their weight class. For clients who love the workstation concept but are working within tighter parameters or for secondary kitchen sinks, butler’s pantries, and prep areas, the Ruvati Workstation earns its place on our spec sheets. The construction and accessory ecosystem aren’t at Galley’s or Kohler’s level overall, but the 16-gauge bowl is a real quality indicator that makes Ruvati a legitimate specification rather than just a budget placeholder.

Sizing: Fitting the Sink to the Kitchen

This is where the decision gets nuanced and where our experience as kitchen designers really comes into play.

The 36″ Standard

The baseline for most single bowl undermount workstation sinks is a 36-inch cabinet. This is the most common base cabinet width in residential kitchens across the North Shore, and brands like Kohler, Elkay, and Ruvati are built around it. For clients remodeling without moving walls or reconfiguring cabinets this is typically the most practical path without compromising function.

Going Larger – 45″ and Beyond

When the layout allows for it, moving up to a 45-inch sink or beyond opens a genuinely different level of functionality. A wider bowl creates more working space, more room for the accessory system, and a more dramatic visual presence in the kitchen. This is where Galley and Franke can really shine for our clients building or remodeling and is often the direction the conversation goes.

The Two-Faucet Question

Here’s a detail that surprises a lot of our North Shore Chicago Kitchen design clients: once you move into a wider sink (typically 45 inches and above) a single faucet mounted in the center can struggle to reach both ends of the bowl effectively. In those situations, we often specify two faucets. One primary pull-down at the main work zone, and a secondary prep or bar faucet positioned toward the range side.  Or 2 of the same.

It’s an approach clients are skeptical of at first and then can’t imagine living without. For a Galley system spanning six or seven feet, two faucets isn’t a design preference, it’s a practical necessity. We think carefully about placement, reach, and whether to match both fixtures or mix styles for visual interest. It’s one of those details that separates a thoughtfully designed kitchen from one that just looks good in photos.

How Budget Shapes the Decision For a North Shore Chicago Kitchen Design

Here’s how we approach the conversation with every client:

Ultra-premium build or full gut renovation? Galley is the specification we’re most excited to make. It’s a forever investment that pays off in daily use, resale value, and the pleasure of working in a kitchen designed at the highest level. Come see our working Galley display at Abt Electronics in Glenview before you decide.

European design sensibility with a premium budget? Franke deserves a serious look, particularly if you’re sourcing European appliances and want everything to feel cohesive. Specify the Peak series for 16-gauge quality, and budget for accessories separately.

High-quality kitchen remodel where value matters? Kohler Prolific and Elkay Crosstown are both excellent specifications that our Northshore clients consistently love. Both deliver the full workstation experience at a price point that makes sense without sacrificing quality or aesthetics. If gauge is a priority, Elkay’s 16-gauge construction gives it a slight material edge, but Kohler’s 18-gauge with SilentShield performs beautifully and carries one of the most trusted names in kitchen design.

Value-conscious project or secondary sink location? Ruvati delivers more than you’d expect at its price point and the 16-gauge construction is a genuine quality indicator that sets it apart from other budget options.

We never push a client toward a sink they don’t need. But we also want every client walking away with a kitchen they’ll love using every single day because the right sink makes a difference you’ll feel every time you use your kitchen.  Part of our job is asking the right questions… How do you cook? Do you do a lot of batch prep? Is cleanup a pain point in your current kitchen? Let the answers to those questions guide the specification.

The Bottom Line

The single bowl undermount workstation sink is one of those details that sounds like a small decision until you’re using it every single day. In a North Shore Chicago kitchen design, homeowners are investing in renovated kitchens built to last, perform beautifully, and reflect the way they actually live.

Whether you’re drawn to the ultra-premium ambition of a Galley system, the European craftsmanship of a Franke Peak, the proven reliability of a Kohler Prolific, the American-made quality of an Elkay Crosstown, or the smart value of a Ruvati…there’s a workstation sink that belongs in your kitchen. The key is knowing which one fits your space, your workflow, and your budget.

That’s exactly the kind of guidance we bring to every Chicago kitchen design and remodel project across the North Shore. Let’s start the conversation.
